Summary
J. Allen Hynek is the intellectual founder of serious scientific UFO research. Recruited by the U.S. Air Force in 1948 as a scientific consultant tasked with debunking UFO reports, he spent 21 years examining hundreds of cases filed by military and civilian witnesses across three formal government programs (Project Sign, Project Grudge, and Project Blue Book). His position evolved from committed skeptic to outspoken critic of the Air Force's institutional mandate to dismiss rather than investigate. He invented the Close Encounter classification system that remains the global standard. He founded the Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS) in 1973 - the first serious civilian scientific organization for systematic UFO case documentation. He coined the phrase 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind,' which Steven Spielberg adapted for his 1977 film (consulting Hynek directly and giving him a cameo). His trajectory from institutional debunker to scientific advocate established the template for every government-connected figure who has followed the same path in the decades since.
