Abstract
A method of preparing dichloroformals of the formula (RCH.sub.2 O).sub.2 CCl.sub.2 by reaction of one mole of a thionocarbonate of the formula (RCH.sub.2 O).sub.2 C═S with two moles of benzenesulfenyl chloride, chlorobenzenesulfenyl chloride,r methanesulfenyl chloride wherein R is --C(NO2)3, --CF(NO2)2, --CF2 (NO2), --CCl(NO2)2, --C(NO2)2 CH3, --CCl3, --CF3, or --CF2 CF3. These energetic dichloroformals are useful as explosive and propellant ingredients and as intermediates in the synthesis of other energetic explosive and propellant ingredients.
