Summary

A comprehensive French study on UAP titled 'Les OVNIs et la Defense: A quoi doit-on se preparer?' (UFOs and Defense: What Should We Prepare For?), produced by approximately 13 senior retired French military officers, scientists, and intelligence officials. The report analyzed over 500 UAP cases drawn from French GEPAN/SEPRA records and international sources, concluding that a small but significant percentage remained genuinely unexplained and that the extraterrestrial hypothesis warranted serious scientific consideration.

Significance

One of the most substantive government-adjacent UAP assessments produced outside the United States. Its authorship - including generals, a former ambassador, senior DGA officials, and military doctors - gave it institutional credibility comparable to classified US studies. COMETA's willingness to directly recommend policy action and examine the extraterrestrial hypothesis distinguished it from contemporaneous Western government positions, and it remains the benchmark for European institutional UAP analysis.
